Getting the Social Security number is the foremost important thing here. We went to the nearest SS Centre, within a week of my arrival in the USA, but the lady over their said our marriage certificate is a must. Instead she gave a letter, which could be used to get me a learners licence for driving. Then came the task of getting this marriage certificate from Bangalore India. Luckily, finding it and courier ing it was not an issue.
Once again we visited this office and after a wait of good long 40 minutes, we were called. At the counter, this lady did not really know, how to go about, so she went in and took another lady's help and started filling up the data online with the instructions from the other. She took a while to do this and finally she said it was done and we should receive it within 2 weeks of time.
I got this delivered just within 4 days and then was time to get the ITIN number, which is equivalent to PAN number of India. 15 th April being the last day, we decided to go a day before, but since my husband had meetings lined up in the morning we chose to leave by lunchtime thinking we will manage to reach within time and get it done. We drove all the way to Rochester to IRS east avenue Rochester from Painted Post and as we entered the security guard showed a notice displayed on the door saying, " After 1pm no ITIN applicants were allowed and were asked to return back by 8. 30 am the next day." Had it been in India, we would have haggled with the security, but being in the U.S., we just said oh ok and retuned back. What a waste of time it was? During tax return filing dayS in India, we have such a rush, that the IT department opens several counters in most prominent areas and here they were working but we were not allowed in.
We promptly drove back the next day that too early morning so that we can reach by 8.30 am. We reached at 8.30 am, after a security check and getting a coupon, we were ask to be seated, we sat patiently. The lady at the counter was very impressive and very proactive. We were the 1st one in for this work, our number was displayed and we went in. To our surprise the lady one Mrs. summers, said we were wrongly sent to her counter and that we needed to wait. Our wait was really long, people behind us got their work done and we were just sitting patiently. The counter lady would assure us, you will the next for sure and that's all, I went thrice taking into account the US patient wait at the counter. She just did not do as said, finally an old lady next to her pinged and got some one for us, this man was apologetic and did our work. Oh my, this seemed worse than India to me. Had it been in there we would have had the liberty to shout at the office people but here we are foreigners. We have to behave our selves.
